MAJI KWA WANAFUNZI INITIATIVE 2017: WHEN CSR IS MORE THAN MERELY GIVING BACK
When Family Bank staff embarked on rare CSR journey to donate water tanks to primary schools, the beginning stood miles apart from the progress that has been made so far. In a short three months, there are already 32 benefitting schools from across the country. Each donation and visit to the schools has come with the realization of the need to do more. But one thing stands unchallenged-The fulfillment and the urge to keep going
The Family Bank Maji Kwa Wanafunzi initiative is a countrywide drive involving staff from all the network – 93 outlets, support and business units. It’s a CSR project with a difference. It marks the first time that the Bank is doing a similar activity across the board.
Initially, each branch was at liberty to choose a CSR activity and the beneficiary. The money raised by the branch was topped up with an equal amount by the bank. The branch then carried out their CSR activity independently. 2015 was one such year when the bank staff raised nearly Ksh 2 Million for CSR initiatives. The proceeds went to support various identified needs including children’s homes, hospitals, prisons and school fees arrears in areas where the branches felt will create an impact. These were one-off activities with limited impact yet there was a gaping gap that necessitated an initiative that accommodated uniform participation and a long-lasting impact.
The reality for a uniform CSR initiative was birthed in 2016 when most branches voted in favor of improved access to safe drinking water for school children.
The activity correctly baptized Maji kwa Wanafunzi, sits in perfectly with the banks endeavor to positively transform lives. Simply put, “Maji Kwa Wanafunzi” Initiative is a Ksh 4.5Million project launched in April 2017 and involves staff contribution and the Bank matches the funds with the sole purpose of procuring tanks for supply of this precious commodity in a safe and sustainable way.
In the past 3 months, more than Ksh 1.2Million has been raised by staff in various branches and departments.
This project is timely especially with the doomed forecasts of rain inadequacies and the frequent water rationing consequences. With immense gratitude, school heads and committees have hailed the efforts of the Family Bank staff. They have unanimously described the Maji Kwa Wanafunzi initiative as thoughtful, timely and superbly helpful.
The gratitude from the children and the teachers is great fuel for the continuity of the journey to hit the target of donating tanks to 40 schools by the end of the project.
