Over 300 Students Have Joined High School Courtesy of Family Bank - Family Bank Limited, Kenya

The Family Group Foundation has commissioned 302 bright but needy students who are beneficiaries of the Tufuzu na Elimu high school scholarship programme. This happened at a colourful ceremony held on January 26, 2023 at the Kasarani Stadium and officiated by the Director of Education Dr. Chacha Mwita and Family Bank CEO Rebecca Mbithi.

Family Bank, through The Family Group Foundation, is spending KES 60 million on this year’s scholarship program. This will cater for tuition, accommodation, school uniforms and upkeep for the 302 beneficiaries who are drawn from 32 counties across the country.

While flagging off the students, Family Bank CEO Rebecca Mbithi recognised the challenges that have faced many of them through their journey to sitting the 2022 KCPE exams but assured them of security all through their secondary education.

“As a financial institution, we are cognisant of the financial hurdles that have faced students in the past year including the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the general election and the shortened school calendar. As I stand here today, I assure you of our commitment as a Bank to walk with you for life and ensure you achieve your dreams,” she said.

Her sentiments were echoed by the Director of Education Dr. Chacha Mwita who applauded the Bank and the Foundation for their continued effort to provide access to quality education.

“As a Ministry, we are fast-tracking reforms to ensure a 100 per cent transition from primary to secondary school. It is therefore commendable to see private sector players support our efforts and strive to nurture learners by supporting learning costs for needy and vulnerable learners. What The Family Group Foundation is doing is great because this is in line with the key focus of CBC curriculum to support wholistic growth of the students,” said Dr. Mwita who noted that 1.24 million students sat for KCPE exams last year.

One of the beneficiaries present was Hussein Reja from Kwale County who studied at New Mkokoni Primary School, scored 384 marks in KCPE and has since joined Kitui High School. Speaking during a panel session he expressed his gratitude to the Foundation and thanked them for fuelling his dreams of being a doctor.

Joining him on the panel session was a fellow beneficiary Michelle Mokeira from Nyamira County who studied at Holystar Academy and scored 382 marks. Just like Hussein, she expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to pursue her secondary school education.

“As I join Pangani Girls, I am happy to know that my dreams of being a neurosurgeon are an inch closer. I am grateful to The Family Group Foundation and Family Bank for this one in a lifetime opportunity to further my education,” said Michelle Mokeira.

Since the inception of The Tufuzu na Elimu programme, The Family Group Foundation has invested over KES 250 million in the education sector and has provided scholarships to over 1,000 students. As a result, the programme has witnessed and continue to witness a 95 per cent transition of students to tertiary institutions.
